Hello!
I am planning a trip to Japan this summer (July) and I'm looking for places to stay. I'm planning on perusing Tokyo first, and then moving my way around if I have the means to do so.
I'm excited to experience art, anime, egl awesomeness, rad parties (with some dubstep, jungle, dancehall/reggae, dub, psychedelic, booty bass, breaks, etc.), engrish, food, and much, much more.
If any of you have been to Japan, or are in Japan, or whatnot, and can provide some suggestions, that would be awesome
I would prefer places to stay that are safe, friendly, quiet, clean, non-smoking, and affordable, as I am working on a budget.
Thanks so much for your help!
^_^

Re: where to stay and where to rock
Wed, June 13, 2007 - 8:44 PMI just went to Japan in April. We stayed at Daiichi Inn Ikebukuro in Tokyo and Hotel Station Kyoto in Kyoto. There were 4 of us and in each hotel, we were all able to stay together in one room, which is great because it's cheaper. Both hotels were very close to the train station. The only criteria we had other than price was that it was clean and we had our own bathroom in our room. Because if you don't mind sharing, you can stay super cheap in dorm-style places.
We got the Japan Rail Pass, so we were able to travel to Nara and Hiroshima/Miyajima from Kyoto. From Tokyo, we visited Yokosuka, where I grew up. I used the International Tourism Center of Japan website to book my hotels. www.itcj.jp . Hope this helps. -

Re: where to stay and where to rock
Mon, June 18, 2007 - 7:37 PMI stayed with friends on my recent trip, but did spend a couple of nights in a capsule hotel in Akihabara. This is absolutely a shared bath option so it wouldn't work for papaya, but "bathroom down the hall" is my normal travel situation. I did the capsule for the experience. It was not that comfortable, noise-wise. Imagine being in a room full of 40 or so snoring folk. Women and men are on separate floors with separate but communal baths. I found it pretty easy to get into conversations and ended up going out to dinner with a college student in town from Kyoto for a job interview. It was about 4500 jpy/night in April. -

Sun, June 24, 2007 - 6:07 PMWe stayed at Kimi Ryokan when we went in 2003. It was acceptable. We wanted to stay at Kangetsu, but they were booked. Oh, well. Maybe next time.
